Flood hazard assessment and evaluation of emergency preparedness procedures, City of Mainz

General information

Client: Municipality of Mainz
Location: Mainz; Germany
Project duration: 02/2009 - 10/2009
Key characteristics: Integrated flood concept, emergency preparedness, harbour area, urban development

Project description

The urban development department of the City of Mainz intended to convert a harbor area into a residential area. The new residential area necessitated an integrated flood concept to prove its resilience against flood events and remaining risk of being inundated. The project was part of the feasibility study and required emergency preparedness procedures with cost-effectiveness considerations in terms of the development of the area and disaster risk management.

The multi-million project brought investors, urban planners and water resources engineers together in order to find a compromise between urban development and disaster risk mitigation.
